mit seinen Jüngern
for bass trombone and live electronics (2016)

I frequently become obsessed with small fragments of music, and end up listening to only one section or phrase for weeks on end. My piece mit seinen Jüngern is a fantasy on a section of a recitative from Bach's Johannes-Passion, whose solo tenor part acts as a loose structure for the composition. The electronics serve the purpose of extending the timbral and textural potential of the solo bass trombone, as well as bridging the gap between the original harmonic context of the recitative and the composed material.

First performance: July 19, 2016. Performed by Benjamin Anderson and Jacob Abela.
